UV protection in the excavator cab

More employee protection in the fully glazed operator’s cabin – Foiled by Sun-point

Problem:
High UV exposure for drivers of construction machinery.

Solution:
BRUXSAFOL Sun protection film XH45

Achieved performance:
Very high protection against harmful UV radiation while maintaining a clear view from the cabin.

Anyone who operates an excavator or other construction machine every day often works for hours in the sun – even if they are sitting in a closed operator’s cab. This is because although the large-area glazing provides the necessary all-round visibility, it can also let UV radiation into the interior.
UV rays cannot be seen. You can’t feel them immediately. And that is precisely why they are often underestimated in everyday working life. Both UV-A and UV-B rays can damage the skin and eyes. They can cause sunburn, premature skin ageing and clouding of the lens. UV radiation is also one of the most important risk factors in the development of many forms of skin cancer.

Invisible danger for drivers
Single-pane glass, which is often used in construction machinery, only offers limited protection against UV-A radiation. The transmittance can be around 60 percent. This means that anyone who is exposed to sunlight through this type of glazing over a long period of time risks permanent skin damage – even if they appear to be protected in the cab.
The long exposure time is particularly critical. This is because work on construction sites, in civil engineering, road construction or earthworks often lasts for many hours. The longer the UV exposure lasts, the greater the risk. A sun-safe workplace is therefore an important contribution to protecting the people who work on these machines every day.

High protection with a clear view
The solution: applying a high-performance UV protection film to the glass surfaces of the construction machine. The view to the outside is maintained – a decisive factor for safety in daily use. At the same time, the film offers a very high level of protection against harmful radiation.
BRUXSAFOL UV protection films block approx. 99 % of UV rays up to 378.1 nm. Only above this range does the light transmission of ultraviolet radiation increase again. This results in UV protection of 99.5 %. Depending on the type of film, up to 99.9 % of UV rays can be blocked – comparable to a very high sun protection factor.

Employee protection starts in the cabin
UV protection is more than just a personal precaution. Especially in a professional environment, it is part of responsible employee protection. Anyone who employs people in sun-exposed work areas on a daily basis should also make the conditions at the workplace correspondingly safe.
UV protection films are a simple and effective measure for this. They significantly reduce exposure to harmful radiation without restricting the necessary view from the cabin. This creates a workplace that is not only functional, but also better protects the health of drivers.
For companies, this means more safety in everyday working life, more responsibility towards employees and a clear contribution to preventive health protection.
